The Cranbrook Museum has galleries dedicated to ever-changing exhibitions of modern art that are on view for a limited time. This is usually our first stop due to their fleeting nature. Past exhibits have included a curated collection of record album art, designer art toys, and new work by artists like Ian McDonald. It’s also home to the annual exhibition of works by graduating Cranbrook Academy of Art students.
The grounds of the Cranbrook include several historic houses, and we love the Cranbrook House and Gardens. The house is a masterpiece of the early 20th century Arts and Crafts style so prevalent in the Rochester Hills area, designed by Albert Kahn. House tours are available year-round. Cranbrook Gardens surround the house and are free to tour from May through October.
While we love to visit the Cranbrook’s tropical greenhouse year-round, we especially love to stop by during the cold February weekend when they host their annual winter houseplant sale. Brighten up your home with a selection of plants while supporting the preservation of the Cranbrook House and Gardens.
After you see the art, make some art in Cranbrook’s hands-on workshops. The workshops change, based on the current exhibitions, to give visitors a feel for the work that each artist did to make their pieces. Some workshops span several weeks and go in-depth into techniques, but they also offer one-night classes to get a quick creative fix.
