Premium vs. Regular Gas – What’s the Difference

2021 Porsche Cayenne Driving

Most Birmingham drivers seem to understand that most cars don’t require premium gasoline and will do just fine on unleaded. But what about your car? What about Porsche vehicles? To answer the whole premium vs regular gas question, it’s important to understand the difference between premium and regular gas.

The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

The main and only real difference between premium and regular gas is octane. Premium gas has a higher octane rating, which makes it burn more slowly than regular. But it does not burn more cleanly, nor will using it give you better gas mileage.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: Porsche Automobiles

Your Porsche automobile sports a high-performance engine that has been precision-engineered. It was built to use only premium gas. Porsche engines have a number of sensors designed to precisely time the firing of the cylinders. Low octane fuel will cause the pistons to fire too quickly, eventually causing serious and even catastrophic damage to the engine. So, use only high-octane gas in your Porsche automobile. After all, you wouldn’t want to find yourself broken down somewhere along one of our Rochester Hills roads.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: Other Cars

What about other cars? Should you use premium gas in them? Always check the owner’s manual to find the answer. If the owner’s manual says that premium gas is required, by all means, use premium fuel for the same reasons you would use it in a Porsche vehicle. However, if premium gas is only suggested, and not required, we recommend you test your car’s performance, comparing both regular and premium. If you don’t notice a difference in fuel economy or in how the engine sounds, it isn’t worth it to use premium. What if the manufacturer doesn’t suggest premium fuel? Then your car will not benefit from premium gas.
